Category Information


General

  • The number of entries in each section will be limited.
  • Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis.
  • All competitors must submit a completed entry form and places will not be allocated until the entry forms of both/all partners are received.
  • You may enter as many categories as you wish (according to eligibility). But please be aware that the running order of the day will not be altered to accommodate competitors in back to back events.
  • All teachers must compete at Advanced A level.
  • Youth and Senior competitors may also compete in other categories according to their graded level and eligibility.
  • In all categories partners must not break contact or do breakaway dancing at any one time for more than 4 bars of music or approx 10-15 seconds.
  • In all categories (except Advanced Open, Showcase and Teams), competitors will be penalised for any form of aerials. In Intermediate and Advanced A/B freestyle during a Ceroc lift, one of the woman’s feet must be below the man’s waist/belt line at all times. Aerials and lifts, where appropriate, will only receive credit if they are performed cleanly and are seamlessly worked into freestyle or your routine, including entries and exits. “Acrobatic throws” are aerials that do not maintain physical contact throughout the manoeuvre and are only permitted in the Showcase and Teams sections.


Beginners Freestyle

Beginners Freestyle is any combination of Ceroc beginner level moves, or moves that reflect Ceroc beginner level, either in a routine or “off the cuff”. No lifts, jumps or drops permitted, you will be penalised for doing these moves.

Music and speed: one medium song (speed 120 - 130 bpm) of 2 to 3 minutes duration.

To qualify: attending Beginner classes only up to competition date.

Judging Criteria: timing, sense of fun, costume and execution of moves.

 


Intermediate Freestyle

Intermediate Freestyle is any combination of Ceroc moves, or moves that reflect Ceroc performed freestyle or “off the cuff”. Ceroc drops are permitted. Aerials are not permitted, i.e. in lifts one of the woman’s feet must be below the man’s waist/belt line at all times. If a couple performs a move where both the woman’s feet are lifted above the man’s waist intentionally you will be penalised.

Music and speed: one medium song (speed 120 - 140 bpm) of 2 to 3 minutes duration.

To qualify: attending Intermediate / Intermediate Improver / Intermediate Plus type classes only up to competition date. You must not have done any Advanced classes, or be judged to be at Advanced level.

Judging Criteria: timing, sense of fun, execution of moves, costume and musical interpretation.

 


Advanced B Freestyle

Advanced Freestyle is any combination of Ceroc moves or moves that reflect Ceroc, performed freestyle or “off the cuff”. Ceroc drops are permitted. Aerials are not permitted, i.e. in lifts one of the woman’s feet must be below the man’s waist/belt line at all times. If a couple performs a move where both the woman’s feet are lifted above the man’s waist intentionally you will be penalised.

Music and speed: one medium to fast song of 2 to 3 minutes duration. In the final couples will dance two songs: one slow and one fast (speed 100 – 165 bpm).

To qualify: attending Advanced Intro / Advanced classes up to competition date, current & former advanced demo / performance dancers or any person judged to be at this level by Ceroc staff, with the exception that any person qualifying for Advanced A is not permitted in this section.

Judging Criteria: timing, sense of fun, musical interpretation, technical excellence and difficulty of moves, originality of moves, costume and showmanship.

 


Advanced A Freestyle

Same criteria as for Advanced B with the exception that all teachers, professional dancers and previous Advanced place getters (6 months prior to this event) qualify.

 


Advanced Open Freestyle

Same criteria as for Advanced A and B with the exception that aerials are allowed.

 


Youth Freestyle

Youth Freestyle is any combination of Ceroc moves, or moves that reflect Ceroc, either in a routine or freestyle “off the cuff”. Ceroc drops are permitted. Aerials are not permitted, i.e. in lifts one of the woman’s feet must be below the man’s waist/belt line at all times. If a couple performs a move where both the woman’s feet are lifted above the man’s waist intentionally you will be penalised.

Music and speed: one medium song (speed 120 - 130 bpm) of 2 to 3 minutes duration.

To qualify: both partners must be under 20 years old on the day of the competition. Proof of age may be required.

Judging Criteria: timing, execution of moves, musical interpretation and costume.

 


Senior Freestyle

Same criteria as for Youth Freestyle with the exception that both partners must be 50 years old or over on the day of the competition to qualify.

 


Dance With A Stranger (DWAS)

This category has beginner, intermediate and advanced sections .

Dance With a Stranger will involve 6 couples on the floor at a time and partners swapped every 35 seconds until all 6 men have danced with all 6 women.

Same eligibility criteria as for freestyle categories.

 


Battle of the Sexes

Battle of the sexes is any combination of Ceroc moves or moves that reflect Ceroc, performed freestyle or “off the cuff”. Battle of the sexes is open to everyone, however competitors must only dance moves relative to their level or they will be re-graded. Aerials are permitted.

Music and speed: one medium song (speed 120 - 130 bpm) of 2 to 3 minutes duration.

To qualify: both partners must be of the same sex.

Judging Criteria: timing, sense of fun, musical interpretation, and difficulty of moves,
costume and audience appeal.



Triples

Triples is any combination of moves that reflect Ceroc, either in a routine or “off the cuff”. Ceroc drops and aerials are permitted, however competitors must only dance moves relative to their level or they will be re-graded.

Music and speed: one medium song (speed 120 - 130 bpm) of 2 to 3 minutes duration.

To qualify: three partners are required.

Judging Criteria: timing, synchronization, musical interpretation, and difficulty of moves, originality of choreography, costume and audience appeal.

 


Showcase

Showcase is a performance dance by one couple to set music. Timing starts when the performance commences, as indicated by voice, music, physical presence on dance floor or dance. Opening/scene setting is restricted to 30 seconds commencing from when the dancers start their performance. Couples must be dancing in contact after this time. Aerials are permitted for Advanced competitors in this section. Ceroc content must be 70%. Non-Ceroc content, e.g. hip-hop, salsa, breakaways etc, must be no more than 30%.

Music and speed: your own choice, minimum of 3 minutes, maximum of 4 minutes. Please provide CD format with your entry form. Label it with your name, phone number, track required, and the cue to press play.

Couples per heat: one

To qualify: Showcase is open to everyone, however competitors must only dance moves relative to their level or they will be re-graded.

Judging Criteria: timing, opening and closing, musical interpretation and choreography, technical excellence and difficulty of moves, originality of moves, costume and showmanship.

 


Teams

Teams is a performance dance routine by three or more couples to set music. Timing starts when the performance commences, as indicated by voice, music, physical presence on dance floor or dance. Opening/scene setting is restricted to 30 seconds commencing from when the dancers start their performance. Couples must be dancing in contact after this time. During the performance, partners must not do breakaway dancing at any one time for more than 4 bars of music or approx 10-15 seconds. Aerials are permitted for Advanced competitors in this section. Ceroc content must be 70%. Non-Ceroc content, e.g. hip-hop, salsa, breakaways etc, must be no more than 30%.

Music and speed: your own choice, minimum of 3 minutes, maximum of 4 minutes. Please provide CD format with your entry form. Label it with your name, phone number, track required, and the cue to press play.

To qualify: a team must consist of three or more couples or triples. Teams are open to everyone, however competitors must only dance moves relative to their level or they will be re-graded.
