Good Shoes Make a Difference

Having appropriate footwear can make all the difference and most people wait too long before investing in a pair of dance shoes. You can get shoes from:

  • Dance Pacific: 351 Colombo Street, Sydenham. 366 4238
  • Dance Essentials: 35 Acheron Drive, Riccarton. 348 8048 (call for opening hours)
  • Dance Store: www.dancestore.co.nz. 027 452 8669 (see bottom of page for more info)

Dance shoes are designed for dancing - funny that - and so there are distinct advantages to wearing them:

  • Easier to turn and spin
  • Allow feet to breathe
  • Better support

Let's look at some excuses for not wearing them and then give reasons why each excuse doesn't stand up to much.

  • I'm not a proper dancer
  • They're too expensive
  • I'm a man and real men don't wear dance shoes (Matt's exuse for a couple of years)
  • I don't know where to get them

I'm not a proper dancer

A good excuse at first glance, after all we're not professional performers. Then you realise you can use this excuse for pretty much anything:

  • I'm not a professional tramping guide so I'll just wear jandals on the Milford Track.
  • I'm not a proper surfer so I'll just use an ironing board.
  • etc.

Basically, if you're engaged in a particular sport or activity it's usually advisable to get the right equipment regardless of your ability. Getting good shoes means you can't blame them.

They're too expensive

Dancing = good health in so many ways. We're honoured that you come and join us at classes and parties. We're totally committed to bringing the joy and benefits of dancing to the people of Christchurch. You're looking after yourself by dancing, take the extra step and get some dance shoes - it's definitely worth it.

Be prepared to spend around $80 - $150, could be more could be less. If you dance every week then you spend this over a period of a few months with us.

Put a couple of dollars aside each time you come dancing (e.g. gold coin in a tin / jar) and save towards a pair of shoes.

Buy a multitrip card and put the money you've saved towards some shoes.

I'm a man and real men don't wear dance shoes

As I said, this was the dumb excuse I used for a long time. Once I bought my first pair of dance shoes I never looked back except to ponder all the months I could have enjoyed more had I bought them earlier.

Would you use a blunt saw to cut wood? A Honda Civic to plough a field? A pea shooter to hunt possums? Mate, if you're going to throw shapes on the dance floor then get the gear.

For your first shoes, don't go for a big heel (known as Cuban heels) they can be a bit unsettling, go for comfort.

I don't know where to get them
